Big Red Shoe 15k draws in large donation for Ronald McDonald House

The 2nd annual Big Red Shoe 15K run in Joplin this morning is expected to draw in more than $10,000.

More than 180 runners registered for the event, from which all proceeds go to Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Four States.

The Ronald McDonald House provides temporary housing to the families of children staying in nearby hospitals.

While the 9.3 mile course is rigorous, organizers say it is worth the challenge.

"The little part they have to suffer going up hills doesn't compare to what the families go through for months on end with their premature child here and the heartache that they have," said Travis Keller, race co-director.  "We will take that challenge for them and help out."

Organizers say they plan to host the Big Red Shoe 15K again next year.
