MIAA volleyball digs into week two

#5 Central Missouri to face top five team for second straight week
Record: 3-1, 0-0 MIAA      Sept. 12: vs. #4 BYU-Hawaii 10:30 a.m./vs. Colorado Mesa 3:30 p.m.
Sept. 13: vs. Florida Southern 1 p.m./vs. Metro State 8:30 p.m.
#5 Central Missouri will head to Denver, Colo. for the Colorado Premier Challenge where they will face their second top five opponent in as many weeks. The Jennies are led by MIAA Hitter of the Week Haley Thompson who is averaging 4.58 kills per set and hitting .432 to for the season with an average of 1.00 blocks per set. Also on the attack Carly Sojka is averaging 3.42 kills per set. Kourtney Thompson is averaging a team best 10.25 assists per set while Annie Reilly average 6.42 digs per set.

Central Oklahoma stays in state
Record: 4-0, 0-0 MIAA    Sept. 12: vs. Texas A&M-International 10 a.m./at East Central 5 p.m.
Sept. 13: at Southeastern Oklahoma State 10 a.m./vs. New Mexico Highlands 2 p.m.
Central Oklahoma will head in state to the Tiger/Savage Storm Classic where they will play four matches on the weekend looking to stay undefeated. On the attack the Bronchos are led by Allison Barr who is averaging 3.18 kills per set and hitting .485. Barbara Jackson is averaging 3.08 kills per set. At the net Juliette Smith leads the way with 1.42 blocks per set. Katy Davis had a team best 11.38 assists per set on the weekend while Whitney Gifford had 4.46 digs per set to lead the return.

Emporia State preps for home opener
Record: 3-0, 0-0 MIAA     Sept. 9: vs. William Jewell 7 p.m. 
Sept. 11: at Rockhurst 7 p.m.
Emporia State opens up their home schedule against William Jewell before hitting the road to face Rockhurst. On the attack the Hornets are led by Carly Spicer who is averaging 4.83 kills per set while hitting .320 for the year. Shayla Cotman is averagin 2.42 kills per set while hitting a team best .421 on the season. Kimberly Bell is averaging 6.67 assists per set and Kelly Holden averaged 3.33 digs per set the opening weekend.

Fort Hays State stays out on the road 
Record: 3-1, 0-0 MIAA  Sept. 12: vs. Minnesota St.-Moorhead 2 p.m./at Sioux Falls 7 p.m.
Sept. 13: vs. #23 Augustana 11:30 a.m./vs. Bemidji State 4:30 p.m.
Fort Hays State will travel to Sioux Falls for the MIAA/NSIC Crossover. On the attack Mallory Flagor is leading the way averaging 4.20 kills per set and a .372 hitting percentage. Libby Ary led the way passing for the Tigers averaging 6.47 assists per set in a two setter system. On the return Keanu Bradley had a team best 5.07 digs per set while Rebekah Spainhour had 0.60 blocks per set.

Lindenwood heads for the mountains
Record: 2-2, 0-0 MIAA     Sept. 12: at UC-Colorado Springs 2 p.m./vs. Saint Martins 6 p.m.
Sept. 13: at Colorado State-Pueblo 12 p.m./vs. Alaska Fairbanks 6 p.m.
Lindenwood hits the road for the CSU-Pueblo/UC-Colorado Springs Volleyball Classic. The Lions were led by Shannon Doyle who is averaging 3.20 kills per set on the attack. In a two setter system Ivy Reynolds is averaging 6.80 assists and Sarah-Jane Pavlik 4.25 assists per set. On the return Anna Reichert is averaging 4.67 digs per set and Sarah Makowski 1.47 blocks per set.

Missouri Southern on the road in Oklahoma
Record: 1-3, 0-0 MIAA       Sept. 12: vs. New Mexico Highlands 12 p.m./ at East Central 7 p.m.
Sept. 13: vs. Southern Nazarene 12 p.m./at Southeastern Oklahoma State 4 p.m.
Missouri Southern will head to the Tiger/Savage Storm Classic for four matches this weekend. On the attack the Lions are led by Krishna Merriman who is averaging 2.88 kills and Katie Politte with 2.56 kills per set. Abby Finder leads the team with 8.32 assists and Katie Wiele is averaging 5.12 digs per set. At the net Callie Whetstone is averaging 1.81 blocks per set.

Missouri Western heads up north
Record: 3-1, 0-0 MIAA      Sept. 12: vs. Bemidji State 11:30 a.m./vs. #23 Augustana 4:30 p.m.
Sept. 13: vs. Minnesota State-Moorhead 2 p.m./at Sioux Falls 7 p.m.
Missouri Western takes a 3-1 record on the road to the MIAA/NSIC crossover in Sioux Falls. On the attack the Griffons are led by Erica Rottinghaus who is averaging 4.43 kills per set with a .409 hitting percentage. Jordan Chohon is leading the way averaging 11.50 assists per set. On the return Sarah Faubel is averaging 3.64 digs and Lindsey Partridge 1.07 blocks per set.

#6 Nebraska-Kearney goes to Colorado
Record: 4-0, 0-0 MIAA     Sept. 12: at Colorado State-Pueblo 12 p.m./vs. Adams State 6 p.m.  
Sept. 13: vs. Saint Martins 2 p.m./vs. UC-Colorado Springs 8 p.m.
#6 Nebraska-Kearney will travel to the CSU-Pueblo/UC-Colorado Springs Volleyball Classic. On the attack the Lopers are led by Kellie Carver with 3.67 kills per set and a .480 hitting percentage and Kinslie TeKolste with 3.17 kills per set. MIAA Specialist of the Week Erin Seele averaged 13.17 assists per set in the opening week. On the return Liz McGowan led the way with 4.58 digs per set.

Northwest Missouri heads up north
Record: 2-2, 0-0 MIAA Sept. 12: vs. #23 Augustana 11:30 a.m./vs. Bemidji St. 4:30 p.m. Sept. 13: vs. Sioux Falls 2 p.m./vs. MSU-Moorhead 7 p.m.
Northwest Missouri will travel to MIAA/NSIC Crossover in Sioux Falls. On the attack the Bearcats are led by Miranda Foster who is averaging 3.21 kills per set. Sarah Dannettrell is the primary setter for NWMSU averaging 9.86 assists per set. On the return Bailey Vance is averaging 3.92 digs per set.

Pittsburg State heads out to Colorado
Record: 2-2, 0-0 MIAA  Sept.12: vs. St. Martin's 11 a.m./at UC-CSP 7 p.m. 
Sept. 13: vs. Adams St. 11 a.m./at CSU-Pueblo 7 p.m.
Pittsburg State will travel to the CSU-Pueblo/UC-Colorado Springs Volleyball Classic. On the attack the Gorillas are led by Madison Mosier who is averaging 4.25 kills per set with a .359 hitting percentage. Hayley Hansford averaged 10.94 assists and Ashlen Schwartz 4.25 digs per set the opening weekend.

Southwest Baptist faces ranked opponent
Record: 4-0, 0-0 MIAA Sept. 12: at #21 Northern St. 12:15 p.m./vs. Crookston 4:45 p.m. Sept. 13: vs. St. Cloud 12 a.m./vs. Minot 4:45 p.m.
Southwest Baptist heads to the Northern State Classic to face #21 NSU. On the attack the Bearcats are led by Kalyn Sotomayor who is averaging 3.25 kills per set with a .315 hitting percentage. Kelsey Frankhauser averaged 10.44 assists while Hannah Blount finished the opening weekend with 4.19 digs per set.

#7 Washburn heads down to Oklahoma
Record: 4-0, 0-0 MIAA  Sept. 12: vs. S. Nazarene 12 p.m./at SE Okla. St. 7 p.m.   Sept. 13: vs. A&M International 10 a.m./vs. Langston 2 p.m.
#7 Washburn will head to the Tiger/Savage Storm Classic for four matches this weekend. On the attack the Ichabods are led by Marissa Cox who is averaging 3.33 kills per set with a .337 hitting percentage. In a two setter system Natalie Bates is averaging 5.58 assists and Alyssa Carney 5.64 digs per set.

    The Missouri Supreme Court might have to assign a special judge to a Carl Junction child murder case. There have now been six judges in a 2017 child murder case in southwest Missouri, four of which have recused themselves. Jalen Vaden is accused of killing 3-year-old Jayda Kyle at the Carl Junction home he shared with the child's mother. Vaden is charged with second degree murder and abuse or neglect resulting in death. Jasper County Associate Court Judge Joseph Hensley presided...
