Razorback Football D’Appollonio Named Candidate for Scholar-Athlete Award

Updated:
Press Release University of Arkansas:

Senior long snapper Alan D'Appollonio has been named a semifinalist for the prestigious 2014 William V. Campbell Trophy
®, presented by Fidelity Investments®, as announced by the National Football Foundation & College Hall of Fame (NFF) Thursday. D'Appollonio is one of 167 semifinalists and one of 62 semifinalists from the FBS.

D'Appollonio (pronounced dee-app-oh-LOHN-ee-oh) has been the starting long snapper for the past four seasons and began his career as a walk-on before head coach Bret Bielema awarded him a scholarship in May 2013. He has been accurate on every one of his snaps spanning 41 consecutive games. The senior has made six tackles in his career and caught a 24-yard pass on a fake punt at Rutgers in 2013, earning the Razorbacks a first down. His efforts in the Rutgers game earned him SEC Special Teams Player of the Week honors, the first long snapper to ever win the award.

Off the field, D'Appollonio embodies everything being a Razorback is all about. The Phoenix native is double majoring in political science and international studies with a minor in business and will graduate early in December. His 3.43 grade point average is among the highest on the team and he has achieved a perfect 4.0 GPA in two semesters while balancing the demands of being a football student-athlete in the Southeastern Conference.

He is also active in the community, spending time and energy helping those less fortunate. He has volunteered at a variety of places in Northwest Arkansas, including the Veterans Affairs hospital, the Northwest Arkansas Food Bank and the Razorbacks' 101 Women's Football Clinic.

Launched in 1959, the NFF scholar-athlete program became the first initiative in history to award post-graduate scholarships based on both a player's academic and athletic accomplishments, and it has recognized 787 outstanding individuals since its inception. The Campbell Trophy, first awarded in 1990, adds to the program's prestige, having previously honored two Rhodes Scholars, a Rhodes Scholar finalist, two Heisman Trophy winners and five first-round NFL draft picks. Earlier this month, Fidelity Investments became the first presenting sponsor of the Campbell Trophy.

The Razorbacks will travel to AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas, to take on Texas A&M on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The game will be nationally televised on CBS.
