Carthage fire leaves home a total loss

Updated:
Fire officials say weather conditions created a challenge in responding to a house fire in Carthage this afternoon.

Officials received a call to the 1400 block of Chestnut Street around 2 p.m.

Wind quickly spread the flames as crews worked to put out the blaze, leaving the home a total loss.

"The wind was blowing hard enough that I had to call the guys down," said Deputy Chief Roger Williams, Carthage Fire Department.

Three people were inside the home when the fire began.

No injuries were reported, but one person was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

The homeowner, a 64-year-old woman, had insurance, but says nothing can be salvaged from her home.

"It's just sad," Williams said. "They were fixing the house up and remodeling, but now they're going to have to either tear it down or have a lot more rebuilding to do."

"My condolences go to the family and we're here to help where we can," said Rudy Bagchelder, American Red Cross volunteer.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

Donations for the family are being accepted at UMB Bank in Carthage.
