Vice President Delivers Message to Students and Joplin Citizens: You are the Heart & Soul of America

Updated:
The dedication of the new Joplin High School and Franklin Technology center  drew dignitaries at the local state and federal level including Vice President Joe Biden who had a message not just for    students but the city as a whole.

Biden explained why it was important for him to come to Joplin calling the students, the citizens and all present,  the heart and soul of America because  we never  bend  or break.

Biden said, "I've been  amazed  by the determination, the commitment,  the resilience, the unspeakable sense that nothing can defeat us. But most of all, how you all think in terms of community, not just self."

The vice president  noted that people are moving in, not out of Joplin including more businesses. Something he called a testament to the character of the community.

And how Joplin, which rebuilt with no major assets but its people,  inspires the nation.

Biden said, “You  underestimate the hope  all of you give Americans who have been broken and devastated  by  crises in their lives.”

Biden took a more serious tone when talking about lives lost in Joplin in the tornado.

He said, “CJ asked for a moment of silence. I  can tell you from personal experience as someone who  lost  a child and a wife,  every time there's  anniversaries or  celebrations  that follows that,  it brings it all  back for families who have lost loved ones.”

The vice president quoted bible scriptures several times noting  images that the nation saw right after the Joplin tornado including a tree from which America's flag hung and a bible passage nearby.

Biden said, “Along side that flag it said, ‘For I know the plans I have  for you, plans to prosper you not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.' "

The future for students is now here at the new Joplin High School and Franklin Technology Center.
