Southwest Missouri man expresses concern over misuse of handicapped parking spaces

Updated:
To use a disabled parking space or access aisle, there are rules.

"You need to be issued a handicap plate, Missouri license plate or another state plate, handicap emblem or a placard," said Sergeant Mike Malone, Webb City Police Department.

Fully-disabled, Al Abernanthy relies on his daughter Sierra to drive him around, and his disabled permit to give them close access.

"Because that's what these spots are for," said Abernanthy.

He and his daughter often find people without permits using the spaces, as well as parking in the access aisles, meant to give those in wheelchairs or other mobility devices extra room to enter or exit a vehicle.

"If you're blocked there, people with those type of vans cannot get access in and out without having to park down the parking lot," he said.

He says he recently confronted a man in Webb City over the misuse of an access aisle.

"If you had a family member or a child that was in a wheelchair and you had one of these vans and you couldn't park there to get them out because you parked in a spot like that, how would you feel?"

The Webb City Police Department says it does see improper use of parking spots around the city.

"We just ask that people be respectful and if you're not handicap please remember that those that are will need those spots to get access to the game or stores or other places they need to go.that's why we have those spots," said Sgt.. Malone.

Malone also said to pay attention to the handicap parking signs, as each one clearly expresses the fines if you are caught parking there without the proper permit.
