2nd Arrest Made in Pittsburg Homicide

Pittsburg, KS - A second arrest has been made in connection to the October 9, 2014 Taylor Thomas homicide. Darius Euell Rainey, age 21 of Pittsburg, KS was arressted, transported to the Crawford County Jail and booked in for the following offences:

  • First Degree Felony Murder
  • Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Robbery
  • Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Burglary
  • Aggravated Robbery
  • Aggravated Burglary

Both Smith and Rainey are being held $2 Millon Bonds.

An arrest has been made in connection to the October 9, 2014 Taylor Thomas homicide. Tyler Dornez Smith, age 24 of Pittsburg, KS was arrested, transported to the Crawford County Jail and booked in for the following offences:

  • First Degree Felony Murder
  • Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Robbery
  • Conspiracy to Commit Aggravated Burglary
  • Aggravated Burglary

The investigation is ongoing at this time. Anyone having information related to this incident is urged to contact the Pittsburg Police Department at (620)-231-1700. Callers may remain anonymous.

Pittsburg Police Department say the results of an autopsy report preformed on 20 year old Taylor Thomas indicated that he died of a single gun shot wound. 

Police have ruled his death a homicide.

Police are asking anyone with information related to this incident are to call the Pittsburg Police Department at 620-231-1700.  Callers may remain anonymous. 

Investigators from the Pittsburg Police Department, Kansas Bureau of Investigation, Crawford County Sheriff's Department and PSU Police Department continue to follow up on leads. 

Pittsburg, KS - On Thursday October 9, 2014 at 2:01am, officers responded to 907 N Taylor in reference to a disturbance. Officers arrived and located 20 year old Taylor C Thomas in the residence, suffering from an injury. He was transported to Via Christi where he was pronounced deceased.

A death investigation is currently underway with additional information being released at a later time.

Pittsburg State University President Steve Scott issued the following statement upon learning of the death of 20-year-old PSU student Taylor C. Thomas. According to Pittsburg Police, Thomas died shortly after 2 a.m. Thursday as a result of an injury suffered during a disturbance at 907 N. Taylor in Pittsburg, Kan.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the Thomas family,” said President Scott. “There are few things more difficult than losing someone so unexpectedly and at such a young age. I extend my deepest sympathies to Taylor's family and friends, and offer condolences on behalf of the entire Pittsburg State University community.”

Thomas was in his junior year and majoring in Mechanical Engineering Technology. Grief counselors are being made available to the campus community.
