New pre-game tradition established at Pittsburg State University

Updated:

The Pittsburg State University football team now has a new pre-game tradition.

As part of homecoming festivities, university officials held a formal unveiling of the new Champions Plaza outside the football stadium.

The new gorilla statue surrounded by a circle of medallions pays special tribute to the three coaches who have brought the team to four national championships.

Before each home game, the players will now touch the gorilla's hand for good luck as walking into the stadium.

"It's a great addition to our already great facility here at the stadium," said John Norman, senior.

"It's an entirely new element," said Zac Dickey, 2011 Quarterback.  "To be a part of a new tradition, what a wonderful feeling, personally."

"In this moment, we saw a brand new tradition established and I think it's going to be one people really love and enjoy for the decades to come," said Steve Scott, university president.

The construction of Champions Plaza took nearly a year and was funded entirely by an anonymous private donor.
