Joplin Police report shows more use of force (Part V)

Updated:
The Joplin Police Department releases its quarterly use of force report.  Despite the number of total arrests being down from 2013, police have used some type of force more often.

The current report covers July 1 to September 30 of this year and compares data to the same time period last year.

Officers have made close to 2,000 arrests so far this year, compared to a little more than 2,000 arrests last year.  But officers have used some type of force in 45 cases this year, compared to 38 cases last year.

Most of the people involved with the use of force were charged with assault on an officer, and those cases were related to a disturbance call.

The report also focused on jail workers.

Between July and September of this year, detention officers used some level of force in seven cases.  The JPD says these uses of force were used by jail workers to defend themselves, enforce a jail rule, or move a prisoner.  Within those cases, jail workers used a taser seven times, but they also used physical and verbal force.

From July to September of this year, there's been seven complaints against JPD that were generated by citizens.  Three complaints were generated from within JPD.  Complaints range from excessive force to rudeness and failure to perform duties.  Four complaints were found to be true.
