Police Chase Ends In Crash and Fatality

At approximately 7:49 a.m. on Monday, November 3, 2014, the Cherokee County Sheriff's Office was notified that the Crawford County Sheriff's Office and Kansas Highway Patrol were in pursuit of 2002 Pontiac passenger car, which had just been reported stolen out of Pittsburg.

As the pursuit traveled southbound on Kansas HIghway 7 towards Columbus, a Trooper and Cherokee County Deputy deployed a tire deflation device at K7 and Lawton Road.

The suspect was able to avoid the device and turned west onto Lawton Road. A short time later, the suspect lost control of the vehicle, causing it to leave the roadway.  Four occupants were ejected and one occupant was partially ejected.

The five juvenile occupants were all from Pittsburg and sustained injuries. They include:

  • Driver - Noah Kirsch - 16 years old male - transported by medical helicopter to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO.  Pronounced dead at Freeman Hospital.
  • Passenger #1 - Preston Herzog - 15 years old male - transported by medical helicopter to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO.  Transferred to Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City.  Condition unknown.
  • Passenger #2 - Isaiah Beeney - 16 years old male - transported by Cherokee County EMS to Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, KS.  Listed in stable condition.
  • Passenger #3 - Autumn Bell - 16 years old female - transported by Cherokee County EMS to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO.  Listed in good condition.
  • Passenger #4 - Hannah Newcomer - 15 years old female - transported by Cherokee County EMS to Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO.  Transferred to Children's Mercy Hospital, Kansas City.  Condition unknown.
The crash investigation is being conducted by the Kansas Highway Patrol.

    The Missouri Supreme Court might have to assign a special judge to a Carl Junction child murder case. There have now been six judges in a 2017 child murder case in southwest Missouri, four of which have recused themselves. Jalen Vaden is accused of killing 3-year-old Jayda Kyle at the Carl Junction home he shared with the child's mother.
