AT&T donates $5,000 to enhance therapy for local children with autism

Updated:
AT&T Missouri has donated $5,000 to enhance therapy for local children with autism.

The donation was given to the Bill & Virginia Leffen Center for Autism in Joplin at a ceremony this morning.

The money will go towards a pilot program that will purchase iPads for therapists to use when collecting data on patient visits.

Previously, all data was graphed out by hand, but now with the iPads, a treatment decision can be made within 30 minutes.

Managers say the immediate feedback will lead to more effective treatment plans.

"It allows us to become more uniformed in our treatment planning and making sure that every child is accessing the programs that they need to access," said Kristy Parker, Clinical Director at the Bill & Virginia Leffen Center for Autism.

"We feel very good about this and we know the money is going to be used very wisely," said John Sondag, President of AT&T Missouri.  "We're very, very happy to be involved."

Six to eight children are currently taking part in the pilot program.

The hope is to later extend the technology-based program to everyone.
