Joplin Mayor Mike Seibert calls new city manager Sam Anselm a "leader"

Sam demonstrates, leadership, communication skills and he knows how to get things done."

Joplin Mayor Mike Seibert spoke in the company of city council members and officials Wednesday about new City Manager Sam Anselm.

The mayor's words mark the end of the search, which was narrowed down from four candidates to two in recent weeks.

Mayor Seibert says Anselm was the unanimous choice and that he has an ability to move projects forward.

"And also he can problem solve very well," said Seibert. "Because, as we all have experienced, in redevelopment there are challenges, there are delays, and we've got to be able to navigate that and we need a leader that can help navigate staff through that. Sam does an excellent job of that."

Anselm has administrative history with joplin. Prior to taking the reigns as interim city manager, he became the assistant City Manager in April of 2011.

"I've spent my entire career of 16 years in public service, working for three communities," said Anselm. "This is my third city. I can't imagine doing anything else."

Anselm says providing the best customer service to Joplin residents is priority. He also says the city's disaster recovery effort is moving along at the pace it should.

"I know everybody is kind of frustrated sometimes that we haven't seen the development occur on the scale that is has. There are reasons for that. Anytime you deal with funds that have some ties to the federal levels, you have to work through those processes."

Mayor Seibert says the city will now "not miss a beat" as it continues to face changes and challenges

"A great individual that's in place right now and I think will be a great partner in helping the city reach its goals that we have set in front of us for what we envision our community post tornado," said Seibert.

Anselm will start as City Manager immediately.  Anselm and his wife, Jennifer, have 4 children. His annual salary is $155,000.
