Missouri Navy veteran honored this month by Charlie Davis

Updated:
It was more than 70 years ago, but by the way James T. Wilson remembers it, it could have been yesterday.

"I can just see them just like fingers, coming up when they fired and you could hear them going over," said Wilson. "And they fell between us and the Australian cruiser on the backside of us."

the 92-year-old navy veteran served during world war ii for five years.

"You cant name a country I haven't been in, really."

Wilson was in numerous invasions, often in the line of fire.

A man of honor and pride, he speaks of his time active with dignity. But when asked about some of his fellow soldiers, he gets emotional.

"They were the heroes, them guys who sat ashore. They'd have to jump off in that water. We'd take the LST's in and they'd abandon and jump off into the water. They'd have their full packs and the next day we'd see them floating in the water."

Wilson is the recipient of numerous awards and honors. He often shares his stories with local students and servicemen, something that inspires his daughter, Candy Wilson, daily.

"He is a proud proud american and that is part of why I do what I do," she said.

When asked for what he is most thankful,

Wilson sits humbly. He says he has gratitude for all those who serve and for what they give him everyday.

"All the necessities of life and the great land which we should worship. We should be so thankful for these veterans who served and went through all that, god bless them."

Wilson served aboard the USS Boise (CL-47).
