Charges Filed in Golf Course Vandalism

Updated:

Criminal charges have been filed against the person suspected of destroying a green at the Neosho Golf Course.

Toby Ray Friend, 17, has been charged with first degree property damage in connection to destruction of the 13th green on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 11 or the early morning hours of Wednesday, Nov. 12. Friend was arrested on Thursday, Nov. 13.

An anonymous tip led officers to Friend as the person who drove his vehicle off of Waldo Hatler Drive and onto the green, digging several circular ruts, or "doughnuts," into the grass, and causing thousands of taxpayer dollars in damage.

First degree property damage is a Class D felony that carries a sentence of up to four years in prison and/or up to a $5,000 fine.

(11/12) Neosho, MO - The Neosho Police Department is asking the public for any information related to the vandalism that occurred on the 13th green at the Municipal Golf Course on the evening of Tuesday, Nov. 11 or the early morning hours of Wednesday, Nov. 12.

An unknown person or persons drove their vehicle off of Waldo Hatler Drive and onto the green, digging several circular ruts, or “doughnuts,” into the grass, and causing thousands of taxpayer dollars in damage.

“There is a small area on the south end of the green that we will try to utilize for golfers, but the majority of the green is destroyed,” said City Manager Troy Royer. “With limited funding for the golf course we've still tried to make improvements over the last three years, and it's disheartening to see someone just go out for no reason and do damage to something that is such an asset to the city. This is just one more unexpected cost that the city will have to bear to clean up after vandalism.”

Anyone with any information about this act of vandalism is asked to please call the Neosho Police Department at 417-451-8012 or 417-451-8333.
