Lions Women Down Rockhurst 69-40

The Missouri Southern Lions (2-0) defeated Rockhurst 69-40(1-1) Saturday night inside The Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.


Rockhurst got off to a quick start and took a 6-0 lead before Southern would go on a 7-1 run to tie the game at 7-7 on a pair of free throws by Shawnee Phillips with 10:48 to go in the first half. The Hawks would take the lead again just 40 seconds later on a pair of free throws from Laura Wilson before the Lions would go on a 7-0 run to take a 14-9 lead on a jumper from Lex Fitzpatrick.

Rockhurst would get as close as three points at the 7:49 mark on a laup by Lauren Meyers and Jenson Maydew would answer on Southern's next trip as the Lions pushed on the gas pedal to open an 18 point advantage, 35-17, at the break.

Nic Hartzog led the way for the Lions in the first half with 10 points and Phillips led all rebounders with five. For the half, Southern shot 44 percent from the field and 44.4 percent from beyond the arc. The Lions also out rebounded Rockhurst 19-12 and held the Hawks to just 26.3 percent, 5-for-19, from the field.

During halftime the Lions honored former coach Maryann Mitts, she retired as the winningest coach in program history.

In the second half the Lions dominated Rockhurst as they held the Hawks to 23 points and pushed the lead to 33 at 58-25 on a pair of free throws from Sharese Jones just under the nine minute mark.

For the game Hartzog finished with 14 points to lead all scorers. Phillips added 13 and Jones finished with 10. Maydew and Jones led the Lions in rebounding with nine and eight, respectively.

The Lions will be back in action Wednesday as they host Avila with a 6pm tip.

    The Cherokee Township, Weir, and Galena Fire Departments fought a vehicle fire today (May 25) around 7:30 p.m. on Highway 69 near Highway 103. According to authorities a truck was heading south on 69 Highway when the vehicle started smoking. The truck was then completely engulfed by flames. The driver managed to escape the vehicle without any serious injury. Crews had the fire put out by 8:00 p.m. No word yet on what caused the truck to catch on fire.More >>
