20 Gorillas Earn All-MIAA Football Honors

 Twenty members of the MIAA co-champion Pittsburg State University football team earned All-MIAA honors Tuesday (Nov. 18), while senior quarterback Anthony Abenoja was selected the league's Offensive Player of the Year, senior place kicker Connor Frazell was named the conference Special Teams Player of the Year and head coach Tim Beck received Coach of the Year honors.


On offense, Abenoja received first-team All-MIAA honors at quarterback. Junior Marquise Cushon and senior Gavin Lutman both received first-team recognition at wide receiver, while senior Tyler Smith was an unanimous first-team selection on the offensive line. Defensively, sophomore Heath Wilson was selected first-team defensive line, while seniors De'Vante Bausby and Keeston Terry were named first-team defensive backs. Frazell claimed first-team place kicker honors among the special teams group.

Senior Ollie Venegas made the second-team offensive line, while senior Deaven Jensen received second-team honors at defensive line and sophomore Spencer Brown garnered second-team recognition at linebacker.

Sophomore tight end Kyle Swartz, junior defensive lineman Taye Irvin and senior defensive back Aries Herrion all received third-team All-MIAA honors, while junior wide receiver Austin Daniel, redshirt freshman offensive lineman Bo Farrow, senior defensive lineman Avery Adair, senior linebacker Tyler Disney, junior linebacker Colby Hall and sophomore defensive back Deron Washington were named to the honorable mention All-MIAA list.

Beck, who has a 46-13 record in five seasons leading the Gorillas, was named MIAA Coach of the Year for the second time in his tenure. He also received the honor in 2011 when he led his alma mater to a 13-1 record and the 2011 NCAA Division II National Championship.
