Safe Driving Tips

Updated:
Freezing rain will mean some slick spots and depending on temperatures.

Wet roads can turn into black ice.

A wintertime problem that highway patrol troopers say requires extra caution.  Slide offs are common during snow and thawing and refreezing.

Patrol officials recommend drivers make sure their cars and tires are in good, working condition during the winter months.

When inclement weather hits, the patrol says to drive slower and exercise the highest degree of care.

"If you're out on the highway, don't set your cruise control," Sgt. Mike Watson said. "Adjust that speed by adjusting your accelerator. So slow down a little bit by letting off on the gas. By having your cruise control going on, if you start sliding  then the cruise is gonna compensate for that by trying to accelerate more."

And of course, it's always a good idea to allow yourself extra driving time during winter weather.
