Miami Church Gives Away Two Hundred Bikes to Children in Need

Updated:
More than 200 lucky children got their golden ticket to an item on every child's Christmas list...a brand new set of wheels.

“I was so excited to get a new bike with it,” says Mercedes Moore.

“Bikes are just something that's glamorous for a kindergarten through fifth grader and just really gets their attention and gets them excited,” says Children's Pastor Ryon Moore.

Organized by Miami's First Assembly of God, the church partnered with school social workers to pick out the children most deserving.

“And some of these families are not going to have very much for Christmas and we just to bless them,” says Moore.

Unrelated to the pastor, Mercedes's mother Tamara says it was a welcome gift. They've been without a working bike for quite a while.

“Well because her old bike the tire had just run out, so she was super excited."

The First Assembly donated 75 of the bikes, the rest were purchased with money raised from local sponsors.

For organizers the main goal is to celebrate family, something that will be true for 10-year old Steven.

“He's not had a bike, probably in the last couple years. He's wanted one, we just haven't been able to get him one so he'll be very excited to finally get a bike and we'll get to ride together," says his mother.

Bonds that are important for the church during the holiday season.

“The most exciting thing is getting to show the hope of Jesus Christ, because God gave us the greatest gift Jesus and we're just going to be sharing that, the true meaning of Christmas and then getting to see the kids face light up whenever they receive a bike,” says Pastor Moore.

Extra:

Miami's First Assembly of God has been giving away bikes for three years.

It's the largest giveaway yet, 206 bikes total, double last year.
