Today projected as busiest holiday shipping day of the year

Updated:
Today is projected to be the biggest holiday shipping day of the year.

Many residents in the Four States had their packages ready for send off today, in hopes of saving some money on shipping costs.

Webb City resident Loretta Hettinger is shipping off part one of her family's Christmas presents.

"With Christmas coming, I wanted to make sure that my daughter and my two grandsons get their Christmas on time," Hettinger said.

Not only on time, but also with lower shipping costs.

"The shipping prices don't get higher, but the people will have to select a higher service in order to get stuff there before Christmas," said Jason Forgey, manager of the UPS store in Joplin.

Forgey says they have seen nearly four times the amount of shipments sent on a normal week day.

"On a normal Monday, we usually ship about 100 packages," Forgey.

However, this Monday, they shipped more than 300.

FedEx says it is their busiest shipping day with an estimated 22.6 million shipments nationwide.

Forgey says customers can still ship at the lowest service rate over the next 2 or 3 days, with the promise of shipments arriving before Christmas.

He says he and his employees are prepared to put in extra time to help meet the higher demand.

"It makes the days go by a little quicker and it's fun for everybody," Forgey said.

As for Hettinger, she says even Christmas gifts sent at the last minute, are worth the higher shipping rates.

"I just want my grandkids to have their Christmas," Hettinger said. "That's the most important thing."

The last day to ship UPS ground for pre-Christmas delivery is Thursday.

And the last day to ship FedEx ground is on Wednesday.
