Chanute Installs Ultra High Speed Internet

Updated:
If approved by the city commission on Monday Chanute will offer faster internet at a significantly cheaper price than its competitors.

“I think the biggest change is when they actually see how much additional speed that this system brings to them personally,” says City Manager Sam Budreau.

This fiber box is one of the main hubs serving Chanute residents with internet up to 200 times faster.

And that's about three times the national average.

“Is a new standard that will be set across the united states, $40 for a gig of internet...we're not talking megs we're talking gigs, so there's quite a difference there,” says Utility Director Larry Gates.

The new fiber line covers all of Chanute and extends 3miles outside the city limits.

Chanute owns all its utilities-water, electric, and internet. The upgrade is part of a utility enhancement project 20 years in the making.

“One of the reasons I think why we're doing it is economic development. I think to stop the drain brain in our community. Maybe the kids will move back to Chanute because they can work anywhere in the world with a network like we're looking at doing,” says Gates.

Budreau has been working on the project since he's been in office because he believes it offers Chanute businesses big opportunities

“To have in home businesses that are much more adaptable to the external world in regards to being able to operate nationally, internationally, and not just regionally."

The city hopes to eventually sign up everyone with the new service. Phase II of the $19 million project will also be considered on Monday, to install sophisticated wireless electric meters and internet routers.
