Salvation Army in Joplin serves Christmas dinners to nearly 600

The Salvation Army in Joplin served nearly 300 people today, in addition to the 300 mobile meals delivered to homes by volunteers.

Santa welcomed families with candy bags and left presents under the tree for every child.

Organizers say no one should be without a family on Christmas, which is why they aimed to create a strong family atmosphere at the dinner.

"It brought so many smiles to faces," said Charleigh Mueller, 3rd grader.

"It's just the idea that this is a safe environment," said Captain Jamie Curry, coordinator. "It's a structured environment. It gives them some sense of security, but also a sense of well being and belonging."

Salvation Army is still collecting donations through the end of the year, in hopes of meeting their 2014 goal to raise $230,000.
