Carl Junction School district adopts new bullying reporting system called Sprigeo

Updated:
The Carl Junction school district adopted  a new program for students to report problems like bullying.

Students admit bullying exists especially in their social media world.

Senior Sarah Veri says, "I'm amazed how I get on there and I see all these rude comments degrading  people.  And it's a problem.  It doesn't go on so much at school, well, it goes on at school  but not like it used to be. I'll meet you after class and we'll duke it out. It's more on social media and that kind of things and I think that's a big problem."

Students have a new way to report bullying called Sprigeo, an online or phone app system. It replaces ‘Talk About It', which was put in place after the suicide of  junior high student Luke Nugent. His mom contends he was bullied on the school bus.

Carl Junction Public Relations Director Tracie Skaggs says bullying is a disciplinary issue and will involve principals and assistant principals.  But she says, “If they tell us  who is being bullied that's an issue for the counselor to help meet with those students, meet with families, try to give them  tools  on  how to deal with things.  And  how to make sure they are reporting,  feel comfortable reporting as well."

‘Talk About It'  only prompted five reports at the intermediate school,  three  reports at the junior high including one hoax and less than ten at the high school.

Veri says she didn't use it, "I personally have not used anything like this. I feel comfortable going into my principal and talking to him if I had a problem. But I think it's very useful for students who are shy and don't feel they can do that."

She says what sells it is the fact students can be anonymous.

Veri says, "I think since this is anonymous and no one knows. Then  they don't have  that feeling everyone's gonna hate me if they find out  that I'm the one that posted it."

And anybody can report through the Sprigeo site even private citizens.

Skaggs says, "It can be

somebody who's watching out there window and watching at a bus stop."

The Carl Junction system costs about  twenty-two  hundred dollars for three district  schools, covering kids from 4-th through 12-th grades.

Joplin school district also previously used the "Talk About It " program.

It adopted a program called ‘Text About It' which is offered by the same provider and paid for by a grant. To check out the Sprigeo site click here.
