Neosho, Allen and Woodson Counties involved in multi-county outbreak investigation to confirm presence of Norovirus

Updated:
The Kansas Department of Health and Environment says 29 known individuals have been sick.. The Norovirus has been identified in four.

"Norovirus is a very contagious virus you can get norovirus from an infected person contaminated food or water or by touching contaminated surfaces"

Norovirus causes your stomach or intestines to become inflamed, leading to stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea and/or vomiting.

KDHE says at this point the source  appears to be associated with the Meals on Wheels of Southeast Kansas".

"We are in the process at looking at all of the clients that were served by this program both the home delivery program and the program that has people come into the center to eat at the center."

Roz Scarborough with meals on wheels says this is an isolated contamination incident.

"I've been here 14 years and this is the first time I've ever had to deal with an incident such as this," said Scarborough. "And being that this is one incident too many."

She says it is always their goal to provide healthy meals for the elderly.

"I back my kitchens all the way," said Scarborough. "I don't feel that they did anything wrong. I don't feel like that. But like i said, this is one incident too many and it should not have happened in the first place.

Theresa Starr of the Neosho County Health Department stresses the importance of clean hands.

"A lot of times we'll get in the kitchen and we'll be cutting up something or raw vegetables and we'll turn around and touch something else. We want to wash our hands. You want to wash your hands three or four time or even more when you're preparing just one meal."

Residents who believe they are ill with Norovirus should contact their local health department.

According to KDHE, it is important to know that Norovirus is not related to the flu.
