Joplin Library Collects Mail Art from Around the Globe

Updated:
It's called snail mail but it's delivering a different kind of art to Joplin.

The Joplin Post Memorial Library showcases pieces from around the globe.

The goal of the year-long project was to encourage people to correspond creatively using the long lost art of letter writing or sending post cards.

The exhibit features mail of all shapes, sizes and mediums; whether hand drawn, painted, or collaged.

One strange submission was a model skull taped to the outside of an envelope.

A Joplin photographer Emily Frankoski says her piece was inspired by a past love.

"I just kind of hang on to things that I have made in the past or in this case, it's a roll of film. And it was a present from an ex that our relationship didn't turn out so well. But it was really funny because the film didn't develop that he gave me really didn't develop at all so it kind of mirrored our relationship in a way.”

Mail art dates back to the early 50s and 60s. Librarian Jill Sullivan reached out to people through blogs dedicated to the art form.
