Veteran Artwork Sought for Local Competition

Updated:
FAYETTEVILLE, ARKANSAS -

The Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks (VHSO) in Fayetteville, AR is now accepting entries for the local competition of this year's National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. Veteran artisans may contact the Voluntary Service Office at 479-444-4016 for instructions on submitting an entry.

The National Veterans Creative Arts Program introduces and reinforces the benefits of creative arts therapy to Veterans and raises awareness within the public sector as to the positive impact of the arts as therapy. VA medical facilities, like the Veterans Health Care System of the Ozarks, use the creative arts as one form of rehabilitative treatment for Veterans. Across the country each year, Veterans enrolled at VA health care facilities compete in their local creative arts competition.

“We have hundreds of categories that our community's talented Veterans can submit their artwork in for judging. We have had some amazing pieces come through our facility in the previous years, and we are confident 2015 will be no different. First place winners go on to compete at the national level,” states Dr. Mark Enderle, medical center director.

Entries for VHSO's local competition are being accepted from January 12 through February 20, 2015. The competition includes 51 categories in the visual arts division this year that range from oil painting to leatherwork to paint-by-number kits. In addition, there are 100 categories in the performing arts pertaining to all aspects of music, dance, drama and creative writing. To qualify for entry artists must be enrolled for care at VHSO or one of VHSO's Community Based Outpatient Clinics or reside in a state Veteran's home.

The local competition artists' reception will be held on Friday, March 6 at 1PM in the Auditorium of the Fayetteville VA medical center. The public is invited to attend.
