Low gas prices fuel truck and SUV sales

Updated:
Living in the moment.

"Gas price has a huge effect on it," says Brian Taylor with Fletcher Ford in Joplin.

As prices for fuel at the pump push down, sales of trucks and SUV's push up.

"I've always loved pickups," says Melany Buyense.

Buyense is loving the fuel economy in her SUV.

"We get right about 26 miles a gallon now," says Buyense.

But it's a downsize from a pickup she owned years ago.

"In town, it was like 19 miles a gallon," says Buyense.

So there's a chunk of change now.

"We were going from 80 dollars every two weeks in the F-150, down to like 20 dollars," says Buyense.

Here comes the lure to buy a pickup.  Look at the fuel prices right now, and miles per gallon may not mean as much as before.

"They're looking for that reason to buy a new vehicle.  And this is the flavor of the month," says Taylor.

Car salesmen have been keeping track of the months.  Taylor says sales of pickups and SUV's have increased by 15 to 25 percent recently, which he says is "a lot".

Not to put the brakes on things, but there's often a stipulation to these sales.

"If the gas prices stay low," says Buyense.

Good luck with ensuring that.

"The car business is like a roller coaster.  And when the ride is good, you ride it for as long as you can.  And hopefully those prices will stay down for a little while longer," says Taylor.
