Former PSU student joins law officials and victims advocates to host forum on stalking awareness

Updated:
Stalking includes the intentional and repeated following or harassing of another person.

Sarah Bahr was a victim of this from her former fiance.

"Driving by my house, sending me gifts, putting things in my mailbox."

Bahr had a restraining order against him, but this made things worse.

"Sending me constant emails, Facebook messages, hacking my email

After finally prosecuting her stalker, she is now on a mission to educate students about the severity of stalking, as the majority of victims experience it under the age of 25.

"Perpetrators are so cunning and so manipulative and so good at drawing you in at the beginning."

"According to victims' advocate Brooke Powell, many stalking gestures may come off as harmless or even romantic to outsiders, but to the victim, they can be traumatizing."

"Text messages, emails, voicemails, those types of things. To us they may not even seem that bad, and they're not even really maybe illegal, but to a victim it terrorizes them," said Powell.

And with the growth of social media, cyber stalking is becoming even more of a threat.

"With the changing times and the more availability there is and the more people that are using it, it provides another opportunity for someone to potentially use that as a tool for stalking."

Bahr and victims' advocates want students and everyone to know that any form of stalking is wrong and a crime in Kansas and most other states.

"Just because someone isn't physically hitting you doesn't mean they're not abusing you."

Both Bahr and PSU police encourage anyone who feels they're being stalked to keep a record of unwanted instances and to report their issue to the police.
