Miami Schools Proposes $22.7 Million Expansion

Updated:
Among many changes the school board proposes, the biggest is a plan to condense its five elementary schools into two as an addition to Nichols Elementary

Superintendent Loretta Robinson says it will greatly improve the learning atmosphere for students and teachers

"As well as collaborating it offers the opportunity for teachers to come together."

If the bond is approved this small PE classroom would be transformed into a full size gymnasium, giving kids plenty of room to move around.

To improve safety all schools will be remodeled with secure entrances that open directly to an administrative office.

The elementary schools would also get a new cafeteria that would double as a storm shelter. And a new shelter would be built for the middle school.

The total cost of the project is a whopping $22.7 million that would amount to about a $9 increase in property taxes for the average resident a month.

“You're talking a cup of coffee, you're talking a trip to sonic, a trip to Mcdonalds, something like that per month and I think when you look at it that way it's very, very reasonable,” says Miami School Board President Mark Folks.

And Miami residents have mixed opinions

“Probably not, just because of the property tax going up and I don't really agree with putting kids all together,” says Miami resident Madelyn Baron.

“It's an important measure because it'll also help I think in the long run bring businesses to Miami. Because when I think businesses look to relocate here they look at our school system."

One of the biggest perks for parents is 200 extra spots will open up for pre-k classes, a program which currently only supports 20.
