Fifty Shades of Grey Movie and Book bring Business to a Local Lingerie and More Store

Updated:
In the Garden of Eden In the Garden of Eden
It's a best selling book that inspired a much anticipated movie opening tonight in Joplin.  ‘Fifty Shades of Grey' has gotten people talking about what happens behind bedroom doors and inspired its own line of products for the boudoirs. That's bringing curious customers to a local lingerie and more business.

Inside ‘In the Garden of Eden'  are walls of colorful corsets and pretty bras that come in all sizes.

But it also has its own red room. A room filled with bedroom toys. It was not  initially inspired by ‘Fifty  Shades of Grey'  but they do stock items some might have read about in the book.

Co-owner Echo Byfield says,  "It's definitely very lucrative."

Her fiancé and co-owner Austan Allen adds, “That area (bedroom toys)  has taken over the top spot as far as sales.  Corsets were number one but they  are right in line with each other  month after month.”

Echo says, “The people that do spend money in that area, they spend it ."

Austan and Echo say the book has people talking.

Austan says,  "It's taken a little bit of the the stigma off.”

And Echo adds,  "It's brought awareness that  the novelty side of the bedroom is not  necessarily a negative aspect."

The book and movie inspired games and even  its own  product line that  includes masquerade masks, handcuffs, and  a white shirt and gray tie as worn by the main character.

In the Garden of Eden customer, Marilyn, usually buys corsets but says she and her husband experiment with toys too.

“We have fun, um I won't go into detail but there's never a dull moment ."

Marilyn says costumes and role playing help open doors of communication.

"Spicing things up. It can be humorous. It's funny. You put on a nurses outfit and yeah its funny. That kind of breaks the ice. You can  go from there. You can experiment and  become more comfortable with it  and it really enhances things. It certainly doesn't hurt anything.  Especially  as long as you both discuss and communicate  what you're comfortable  with and what your safety zones are."

While owners say it's surprising how many couples of all ages come in wanting the toys, they say massage oils and lingerie are also an important  part of keeping couples coupled.

Austan says, "It introduces  something new to the relationship cause they can actually come in together  look at things. He can say what he likes. she can try it on."

Echo adds, "It's innocent as long as it's what you want to do. It's not forced upon you.  So, it's just fun. And I love the fact of building women's confidence. We have so many women that  come in and

have either never bought  lingerie, never done this  and they walk out feeling so good about themselves.  And so that's the joy i get out of it.”

And a profitable business that could get a bigger boost with the movie.

Echo says, "Lately  everybody that's coming in, they all have plans to see the show."

Echo has commercials running during every showing of the movie in Joplin hoping to bank on its inspiration of  movie watchers.
