Updated:
Brave souls in Pittsburg made a splash raising money for the Special Olympics.

Hundreds of people surrounded the pool at Crimson Villas to watch their friends take the polar bear plunge.

Police, firefighters, fraternity brothers, and even our own team the "Warm hearts, Cold tarts" took the challenge.

The event raises money for the Special Olympics of South East Kansas with sports taking place

"This is the best experience of the year. This is our biggest fundraiser of the year. We're going to raise over $40,000 for Special Olympics. It doesn't get much better than this,” says Pittsburg Police Sergeant Chris Moore.

"It was a lot colder than I expected. And it was very, very shocking. I was not expecting it to sting so bad. and I just wanted to get out as quick as possible," says KOAM News Assistant Korinna Ludlum.

Organizers are confident they raised over their $35,000 goal.

This was the warmest plunge on record, over the last ten years the event has been running.
