Mild Winter Season Means Savings for MODOT & KDOT

Updated:
“Where you at?”

"Just leaving the building, heading out to 32nd here toward Rangeline."

MODOT Maintenance Supervisor Tony Gates' phone has been ringing off the hook after the area's first significant snow storm of the season sets i.

“It feels like winter now. I didn't think we was going to have winter but it's here now,” says Gates.

With big savings at the pump and only about twenty percent of the salt supply used this year it allows MODOT to direct winter clean-up money other places

“Allows us to put some pipes in, we've been cutting a lot of brush that grows out into the roadways and causes some side issues. So it allows us to do a lot of things in the winter, if we're not pushing snow, a lot of the other things that you want to kind of get off your list to help minimize other risks,” says MODOT SW District Maintenance Engineer.

And for KDOT they are also good on supplies this year.

“Coming into this snow, we had only used 37% of our budget, so we were in really, really, really good shape,” says Pittsburg Area Engineer George Dockery.

With less snowfall and plenty of salt to go around that doesn't mean MODOT will be able to use the savings to fund bigger projects in the near future.

“But the bigger picture overall when we drop down to a point that we can just barely take care of those routes that were chosen on the primary system, you know, the savings we get from one winter doesn't make that difference up, unfortunately,” says MODOT SW District Maintenance Engineer.

The savings allow money to go towards minor road repairs, but overtime it's just smoothing over the situation of a big budget shortfall.

“It's just a short term, fill a pot hole and it's something that we need to do and we do every year. It's not a long term answer to smooth pavement and roads that experience that over a long term will actually get rougher,” says Asst. District Engineer Dan Salisbury.
