Crawford County Health Department aims to make county more walking-friendly with federal funds

"There's a big push nationwide for us to be healthier and if we have walking trails that's not anything that costs money." said Crawford County Health Department Officer Janis Goedeke. "We can all go out to a walking trail and take a little walk with our family."

More walking, more biking, more outdoor activity: This is a goal of the Crawford County Health Department and its community partner, Live Well Crawford County.

"Working with the cities to do a ped nets, walking trails and bicycles paths for where it's safer for the bicyclists to actually go out and bike," said Goedeke.

Promoting a more active county was a topic during meetings on Wednesday. The health department met with Live Well and other area leaders to discuss 15 strategies for implementing the $240,000 federal grant it received in January to improve overall health.

Leaders discussed putting some of the funding toward improving the built environment of the county, such as trails, which they said supports a community's health and economy.

"A walkable, bikeable community usually sees some economic growth from that," said Martha Murphy, chair of Live Well Crawford County. "It's attractive to industry and businesses who want to relocate."

Other cities across the nation where commuting by foot or bike  is common, have provided inspiration for the vision for crawford county.

"You could get to school, you could get to our faith community, you could get to your work without having to get into a motorized vehicle, i think would be great."

Martin says Live Well Crawford County would like to see more trails both in the cities and in between the cities.
