Joplin Polar Plunge Raises Money for Special Olympics

Updated:
It was a beautiful day in Joplin for these courageous men and women who were taking an icy dip in Shoal Creek to raise money for the Special Olympics.

This was all for the 2015 Joplin Polar Plunge. Participants took the polar oath before running, walking, jumping into the water. About fifty people all in costume got a running start into the creek before they were fully submerged. Plungers say this was their first reaction when they hit the icy waters:

"It was 'oh my god I can't believe I'm doing this," says Youth Empowerment Project swimmer Leslie Gann.

"A big shock. A little bit of shock going on there. I think my heart stopped for like a split second,” says EGS participant Patrick Chaput.

Organizers hope to raise 16 thousand-five hundred dollars for the 1,700 Special Olympics athletes in SW Missouri.
