Southeast Kansas veterans work to bridge the gap between veterans and their benefits

Updated:
The American Legion Post 64 hosted a veterans service officer from Kansas City to help  vets file claims for disability compensation and health insurance.

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs, more than 3.5 million veterans received disability compensation in 2012. But local veterans say still too many miss out on their benefits because they are unaware or overwhelmed by the process.

The Pittsburg legion began the free service to help Vietnam veterans, but it has since expanded to help those from all wars. It urges local veterans to reach out to the post for help.

"They don't know. There's a lot of vets that don't know that things are out there," said Robert Munson. "I've heard a lot of horror stories of people that came in and didn't know and it was too late for them."

The program has helped close to 600 area veteran received benefits. Area residents can call (620) 231-2240.
