PRESS RELEASE PSU:

Pittsburg State head men's basketball coach Kevin Muff has been chosen by his peers as the MIAA Men's Basketball Co-Coach of the Year. In addition, sophomore Josiah Gustafson was named All-MIAA First Team, Devon Branch, All-MIAA Third Team, and Javis Flynn, MIAA All-Defensive team.

Muff was selected by his peers as he guided the Gorillas to a fifth-place finish in the MIAA regular season, after being picked to finish 10th in the preseason poll. Muff and the Gorillas shared the lead in the league standings at several points in the season. The team finished the regular season with a 16-11 record, despite a rocky 2-4 start and the unexpected loss of key returning players. Pitt State started the conference portion of the season with a 69-67 win over eventual conference champion Northwest Missouri, then went on to add impressive wins over Washburn, Emporia State and Nebraska-Kearney. The Gorilla defended their home court well, posting a 10-2 record in John Lance Arena.

The success of the team could not happen without its players and first-team All-MIAA selection Josiah Gustafson has led the Gorillas with 16.4 points per game, fifth-best in the MIAA. Gustafson leads the team and is eighth in the MIAA in three-point percentage (.440). The sophomore also averages 3.7 rebounds per game. He has scored 20 points or more 10 times this season and in double figures in all but five games.

Senior Devon Branch earned his second Third-Team All-MIAA honor after scoring 14.7 points per game. He is tops on the team and ninth in the MIAA with a .533 shooting percentage. He adds 3.5 rebounds per game, as well as 60 assists, 10 blocked shots and 40 steals on the season. He has scored in double figures in all but four games this season and 20 points or more in four games, including a season-high 27 in a 101-73 win over Nebraska-Kearney on Feb. 12.

Junior Javis Flynn was named to the MIAA All-Defensive team, but his role in running the point for the Gorillas offense has been just as important to the team's success. Flynn Scores 6.2 points and pulls down 3.9 rebounds per game, but his abilities shine through in his passing and ability to take care of the ball . He leads the MIAA with 5.3 assists per game with 143 assists on the season. He has a 1.9 assist/turnover ratio. He is second in the MIAA in steals with 60 for 2.2 steals per game. Flynn set the PSU single game assists record with 12 against Emporia State on Jan. 14. He also hit a buzzer beater, game-winning shot at Missouri Western on Jan. 10.

The Gorilla men take on Northeastern State at 7 p.m. tonight in the first round of the MIAA Tournament. The winning team will advance to take on fourth-seeded Lindenwood at 2:15 p.m. on Thursday, March 5 at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City, Mo.
