A First Look Inside Mercy Joplin's New Operating Rooms

Updated:
Mercy's new hospital has 16 state of the art operating rooms. We take an inside look with cardiovascular surgeon Dr. James Taylor at what the new facilities have to offer.

“This is Mercy hospital Joplin's hybrid operating room. It integrates state of the art radiology and cardiology interventional techniques with the operating rooms. That gives us a certain advantage and enables us to provide patient care from a radiology standpoint,” says Dr. Taylor.

In this operating room is where procedures like open heart surgery take place. The New C-Arm provides surgeons with a 3D reconstruction of the areas they are operating on without being invasive.

Dr. Taylor says “It provides us capabilities of performing percutaneous or across the skin wire work without having to make large incisions."

What's really cool about some of these operating rooms are these bright green lights above me which help surgeons to clearly see what they're working on in the monitors, without having to turn off all the lights.

“What the green lights do is…it allows the rest of the room to be lit up so that the circulating nurses and anesthesia and the scrub techs can see the instruments while the surgeon can still see the monitor,” says Dr. Taylor.

And there are also hidden cameras integrated throughout which doctors can use as a teaching tool.

"We've got cameras in the booms and stuff to where physicians in their office can actually see the procedures going on with the team that's in the OR and they can witness it back in their office,” says John Farnen, Mercy Executive Director for Strategic Projects.

The OR has been designed to make it easier for doctors to wheel patients place to place. The ER and the imaging lab are conveniently located right down the hall.
