Gorilla Athletes Ready for 2015 NCAA-II Indoor Championships

Pittsburg State University athletes will open competition in the 2015 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field Championships Friday (Mar. 13) at CrossPlex in Birmingham, Ala. Fourteen Gorillas – eight men and six women – qualified to nationals.


Redshirt freshman Tanner McNutt, who enters the meet as the No. 1 ranked heptathlete, will open his pursuit of a national championship in the multi-events at 9 a.m. (CDT).

Senior Andre Sanders and freshman Justice Burks will run in the prelims of the 60m hurdles at 3:15 p.m., senior Bryce Starks will compete in the prelims of the 60m at 4 p.m., while senior Jason Crow will run in the prelims of the 200m at 6:25 p.m.

Sanders is qualified ninth in the 60m hurdles (7.97), while Burks has been clocked in 8.05. Crow qualified 10th in the 200m (21.45), while Starks qualfied 12th in the 60m (6.77).

Junior Cassie Caswell will compete in the finals of the women's weight throw at 1 p.m. Friday, while senior Jessica Macy will race in the women's 5,000m at 6:05 p.m. Caswell qualified 12th in the weight throw (60-6.75), while Macy qualified 10th in the 5,000m (16:58.09).

On Saturday, sophomore pentathlete Emilyn Dearman will compete in the multi-events beginning at 9 a.m. She enters the meet ranked second (3,961 pts.). McNut also will wrap up day two action in the heptathlon beginning at 9:15 a.m.

Caswell will compete in the women's shot put at 2 p.m. She qualified 10th overall (48-9). Freshman Kezia Martin (9th, 40-0.75) and sophomore Amira Jenkins (10th, 40-0) will compete in the women's triple jump at 4 p.m., while freshman Emilee Iverson (3rd, 5-10) will compete in the women's high jump at 5:15 p.m.

Senior Jeff Piepenbrink also will seek a second national championship in the men's pole vault Saturday. Piepenbrink, who captured the 2014 outdoor title and finished as the 2014 indoor national runner-up, qualified 12th with a clearance of 16-1.75.

Senior Garrett Appier (3rd, 57-11.25) and sophomore Bo Farrow (12th, 56-3.5) also will compete in the men's shot put at 5 p.m.

Emilee Iverson qualified third in the shot put (5-10). Junior Cassie Caswell qualified 10th in the shot put (48-9)

    Joplin Police received a call about an armed robbery on Sunday just before 10:00 p.m. (April 22, 2018). An employee at Charlie's Chicken (2020E. 32nd Street) says she locked the business up and was walking to her vehicle when a male walked up to her in the parking lot. She said he pointed a handgun at her and demanded the night deposit bag. She gave the suspect the bag and says he ran to the southwest. Police officers could not find him.
