PRESS RELEASE MSSU:

The Missouri Southern baseball team swept both ends of a double-header today, winning 12-7 in the opener and 23-5 in the nightcap over Fort Hays at Larks Park.

The Lions (14-1, 7-0 MIAA) tied a school record for the most runs scored against an MIAA opponent in an MIAA game today with 23 in the second game. The 23 runs ties the mark set in April of 2011 against Southwest Baptist. It is the most runs since the Lions scored 28 against College of the Ozarks last season. Coincidently, Southern also scored 32 runs in a 32-5 win over Missouri-St. Louis in the 1992 MIAA Tournament final in Joplin.

Chris Hoffman started game one for Southern and went the distance picking up win number two on the season. He struck out two and walked none.

Chad Shannon went 3-5 with three RBIs, two home runs and two runs scored in the game. Hoffman went 3-5 with an RBI and a run scored, while Axel Johnson drove in three, scored twice and went 2-3 with a homer of his own. Robbe Ewing went 2-4 with a pair of runs scored and Richie Gorski hit one of four Lions' home runs in the game.

In game two, Payton Walker went the distance for Southern, striking out 11 and walking just one, scattering six hits and allowing just two earned runs for win number four on the season.

The Lions had home runs from Rall and Jackson Cain as Southern scored three in the first, eight in the second, six in the third and another six in the fifth.

Rall went 3-5 with five driven in and four runs, while Cain went 3-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. Hoffman went 2-3 with three RBIs and three runs scored, while Jon Davis was 3-5 with four runs scored. Gorski was 3-4 with four RBIs and two runs scored, while Tee Helsel went 2-3 with three runs and three driven in.

The Lions will conclude the series with the Tigers tomorrow afternoon with a single, nine-inning game at noon.
