Extortion Scam in Pittsburg

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS -

The Pittsburg Police Department has received multiple calls from individuals who have been targeted  by fraudsters in an apparent over-the-phone extortion scam. These victims reported receiving phone calls from subjects claiming to be Pittsburg Police Officers. The victims were told they have outstanding warrants and would be arrested if they did send money to the fraudsters. It is believed that the fraudsters are using Caller ID spoofing techniques to display the PPD's adminstrative line (620)-235-0400.

The PPD will not call and solicit money from people over the phone, and in most cases will not request your personal identifying information (such as your SSN). If you receive a phone call from someone claiming to be a representative of the Pittsburg Police Department, and you suspect that you are being scammed:

  • Request the officer's name and badge number, and
  • Request that you call the officer immediately back at the Department's dispatch phone number (620)-231-1700.
If you already received a similar phone call and believe you are a victim of fraud, please contact your local law enforcement, and request to file a report.

The investigation into this incident is ongoing at this time. Anyone having information related to this incident, or other crims, is urged to contact the Pittsburg Police Department at (620)-231-1700, or at our tip line, (620)-231-TIPS (8477). Callers may remain anonymous.
