Opening weekend for Stained Glass Theatre of Joplin - KOAM TV 7

Opening weekend for Stained Glass Theatre of Joplin

Updated:
After nearly four years of not having a space of their own, members of the Stained Glass Theatre of Joplin are performing their opening show this weekend in a new permanent home.

Actress Beighly Brintnall has put in hours of rehearsal time for the opening performance of 'Pygmalion.'

She says the Stained Glass Theatre family has already fallen in love with its new home.

"I'm grateful to have been rehearsing in this place, and all of us in the cast have put in manual labor in the theatre as well," Brintnall said. "We're just really happy to have this place to call our own."

The previous theatre was destroyed in the 2011 Joplin tornado.

Three people were killed and others injured at the site.

Director and board president Jeremey Wolfe says opening the new theatre location is healing.

"I think for some, this has been a time of closure, finally sort of a closing to the tornado that came through," Wolfe said. "It's a new beginning. It's us being able to move forward."

Purchasing the building, and renovations that have been underway for the past year, cost nearly $125,000, a majority of which was covered by a grant through the Community Foundation of Southwest Missouri.

"If you come to our theatre, you'll notice there are some things that aren't quite done yet," Wolfe said. "We'll finish those in the near future, and I assume we'll keep improving the theatre as we go."

Wolfe hopes the theatre will bring the community together.

Whether sitting in the audience, or auditioning for a role on stage, theatre members encourage everyone to give it a shot.

"Come out and try it out, because you'll never know until you try," Brintnall said. "It could be something that you're great at."

Another performance of the opening show will be held tomorrow at 2:30 p.m.

The theatre is located at 2101 Annie Baxter Avenue.

Additional performances of 'Pygmalion' are scheduled for March 26- 29.
