JEFFERSON CITY, MO -

Secretary of State Jason Kander today announced that Barton County Library received a grant in the amount of $ 6,610 to promote summer reading programs. The funds will be used for activities associated with their eight week summer program which is science themed and targets both children and adults.

“The summer months are great for relaxing and enjoying the warm weather, but oftentimes students stop reading once school is out,” Kander said. “I'm proud my office is able to once again provide programs that encourage Missourians to continue to read and explore their creativity during the summer break.”

The secretary of state's literacy and educational enrichment grants are funded by the Library Services and Technology Act through the U.S. Institute of Museum and Library Services, which is the primary source of federal support for the nation's 122,000 libraries and 17,500 museums. The Institute's mission is to create strong libraries and museums that connect people to information and ideas.

In the 2015 fiscal year, the Missouri State Library, a division of Kander's office, has approved a total of 178 grant applications, distributing $1,111,720 in federal awards to libraries throughout Missouri.
