Barton County Gym Serves Up Pizza for the Hungry

Updated:
A Southwest Missouri fitness club owner works to tackle hunger and improve community health.

Jeremy Augusta of "The Barton County Strength Club" hosted a community pizza party. The doors were open for anyone who was hungry for a slice to come by and eat for free.

The Strength Club crew served fifty pizzas, about four hundred slices, to gym members, interested community members, and the needy.

Augusta and his wife recently moved to the area from Tennessee. They say they love Barton County, but feel there is one void.

"One thing that we've noticed is that there is a need for more nutrition, that there are a lot of kids that are hungry that shouldn't be. So we're tackling this head on,” says Augusta.

Youth minister Anthony Jones says It's something that breaks your heart when you see people walking up and down the streets and don't have a place to sleep or don't have a meal. But year after year with so many jobs going out of our town you do see the problem rising, so it's just an opportunity that we can step up to the plate and try to make a difference."

Augusta says he plans to host the pizza socials every month.

Tuition is still going up at Missouri Southern State University, but it's tweaking the cost increase to credit hours to avoid a state fine. Missouri Southern's Board of Governors approved a 15 percent increase in student tuition last April, upping credit hours by $30. But state education law doesn't allow tuition increases beyond the consumer price index. To avoid a $1.1 million fine, MSSU adjusted down the tuition increase to $20 more per credit.
