Historical items stolen from American Legion Post 13 in Joplin

Updated:
The American Legion Post 13 is a place brimming with history.  World War II articles, merit trophies, old photos.  And it all means so much to Commander Howard Spiva.

"The information that they have accumulated for this community and country is very historical. Early on, teachers would bring their students out here to study all the history that's in this building."

Spiva was jolted on Tuesday when he received a call from Joplin Police informing him the post had been burglarized.

The front doors were shattered. Inside the post, locked doors were forced open. Spiva's office: ransacked.

Some of the items now missing include jackets, an old typewriter, the post's public address system, and office supplies.

"A lot of items that we use daily when we're out here working," said Spiva.

Also gone: a large trophy and several historic honor guard guns used at funerals.

"Anytime anybody loses any of their personal belongings, that's always difficult," said Captain Bob Higginbotham. "I think that in particular, in this instance,  these items not only are important to the american legion, but the community as a whole."

"I wish they would understand that they're taking away from our community and our country, the things that we've all worked for," said Spiva.

"We're sorry for their loss and we're going to give it every effort to see if we can help them with it," said Higginbotham.

A lot was robbed, but not the integrity of post 13. But Spiva says, it still hurts.

"It breaks our heart to know that people will stoop that low to destroy and take something that's very very important to help themselves. All they're doing is hurting someone else."

The doors and windows were fixed Wednesday. Joplin Police are investigating.

MSSU Avoids Million Dollar Fine By Tweaking Its Tuition Increase

Tuition is still going up at Missouri Southern State University, but it's tweaking the cost increase to credit hours to avoid a state fine. Missouri Southern's Board of Governors approved a 15 percent increase in student tuition last April, upping credit hours by $30. But state education law doesn't allow tuition increases beyond the consumer price index. To avoid a $1.1 million fine, MSSU adjusted down the tuition increase to $20 more per credit.
