Free Testing for Sexually Transmitted Infections during April at Choices Medical Clinics

Updated:
Choices medical clinics offer free testing for sexually transmitted infections during April which is S-T-I awareness month.

Undiagnosed sexually transmitted diseases cause twenty-four thousand women to become infertile each year.

Choices medical clinic, which has two Joplin locations and one in Carthage,  are all offering free testing this month particularly for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea and chlamydia.

For many of the sexually transmitted diseases,  a simple urine test is all that is required.

Officials at the clinic say fifty percent of new s-t-d cases are among those between the age of 14 and 24 who are sexually active.

But they say testing is free for anyone and important because you won't always see symptoms, especially with chlamydia.

Clinic executive director Karolyn Schrage says, “Interestingly enough ninety-two  percent of the cases that  are positive in Missouri are a-symptomatic. There's absolutely no way a woman or man would know they have chlamydia and so screening is imperative  to get the treatment."

She adds, “Many diseases can be passed around without any kind of   known symptoms. So you may be asymptomatic. You may not know you have  a sexually transmitted  infection and you can infect someone unknowingly. That's why it's important to know your status, check your status, be responsible  in how you're handling health issues, not only for yourself but for others. "

Choices  officials say testing is important for both men and women and is free and confidential.
