Scammers Target Joplin Residents with Supposed "Tornado Damage"

Updated:
Scammers are looking to take advantage of Joplin residents after severe storms make their way through the area.

Insurance agent Richard Volk received a call from one of his clients saying someone claiming to be from her insurance company said they saw tornado damage on her roof.

The client, like many in Joplin, hadn't received any damage during last week's severe thunderstorms. She quickly hung up on him when she found holes in his story.

Volk says she did the right thing.

"If you have contact with anybody like this you should call your agent and you'll probably find out that it's fraud. There isn't anything out there like that. “

Volk says the only call you would ever receive from an insurance company is from your agent, if you have a claim, a claim adjuster, or if you're having a home inspection.

Joplin Police have had a few similar calls relating to "tornado damage" this morning and one report has been filed.
