Joplin Family YMCA spreads message that staying active can be fun

Updated:
Saturday marked the annual Healthy Kids Day, an initiative part of a national campaign for YMCA chapters that promotes healthy living. The event featured many activities , including an obstacle course, basketball, arts and crafts and family Zumba outdoors. The goal of the day is to expose kids to a variety of exciting ways to be active, as well as to let them know the community is there.

"We are getting them active without them realizing," said Erica DuRossette, Childcare Specialist, Joplin Family YMCA. "As far as, if they're in the bounce house, they're working those legs and they're getting a good cardio in and they don't even realize it. They're out there just having some fun in a bounce house. The same thing with our obstacle course or our hoola hoop booth."

The event also provided healthy snacks to teach kids the importance of eating nutritious foods.
