Vatterott College's HVAC Tips

Updated:
JOPLIN, MISSOURI -

For most folks, springtime is synonymous with cleaning and organizing their homes, but many people overlook a good spring cleaning on their HVAC system. Regular upkeep of your HVAC leads to improved energy efficiency, equipment longevity and fewer service calls. According to the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), a clogged filter in an air conditioner can cost the home owner an extra $480 in cooling costs over the summer! That's why making sure to prep your HVAC system during the spring season is so crucial – it can save you a lot of time, money and frustration when done properly.

To help keep your HVAC running smoothly all season long, Vatterott College – Joplin HVAC Program Director Roger Baller provides some tips on prepping your system for the cooling season.

1. Clean the outdoor unit compressor. It's important to clear any kind of debris that was left from winter such as plants or leaves so there is nothing obstructing it.

2. Clean the evaporator and air-conditioning coils. Dirty coils can result in less efficient cooling, leading to a loss in money and shortening the life of the system.

3. Replace the HVAC filters. These should be changed at least once a month during periods of heavy usage.

4. Make sure the condensate drain is working properly. A poorly working drain can result in water damage or affect the home's humidity levels.

5. Check the ductwork. The ductwork (or the ventilation) is extremely important to the operation of your HVAC system, make sure it does not have any holes or cracks.

6. Test your air-conditioning unit. Springtime means the weather is getting warmer, but not excruciatingly hot. Checking the AC in spring could prevent you from sweltering later if you catch it malfunctioning.

7. Check the air-conditioner refrigerant level. Too much or too little refrigerant will affect the system's efficiency level.

8. Tighten electrical connections and lubricate all HVAC moving parts. The system cannot run properly without well moving parts.

9. Clean the supply vents and return grills. Use a vacuum to make sure any pet hair or dust buildup from the previous season is removed.

10. Check furnace system controls and thermostat. This ensures the starting cycle is working properly so the unit keeps you comfortable when you're home and saves energy while you're out.

During the year, your air conditioning system accumulates dust and dirt, making it less efficient. That means higher utility bills. Industry studies show that almost two-thirds of all service calls are due to issues caused by lack of a regular air conditioning tune-ups and maintenance. These tips will you keep your HVAC maintenance on track so you can stay cool and save money during the hottest months of the year.
