Kids From Across the Country Compete at Pittsburg Karate Tournament

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS - About 200 kids karate chop their way to the top at a competition in Pittsburg.

Karate kids from Kansas, California, Minnesota, and as far as North Carolina competed in head to head  tournaments in the 38th annual Japan Karate-Do-Genbu-Kai Invitational at the St. Mary's-Colgan Field House in Pittsburg.

The school practices the traditional Japanese karate method from its Okinawa homeland.

The director hopes the experience teaches people important values like patience and respect that they can take with them off the mat.

“So most people think it's about fighting, but it's really more to find out about yourself and to learn respect, to respect other people. So it's kind of a mentality that used to very common in the United States. Also, respect each other and pay attention to other people just as much as you pay attention to yourself,” says Kansas Genbu-Kai Pittsburg Director James Otter.

Participants ranged from age 5-72, competing in sparring, weaponry, and belt form competitions.

The event will continue tomorrow.
