Pittsburg Resident Named Nation's Special Olympic "Coach of the Year"

Updated:
PITTSBURG, KANSAS - A Pittsburg resident is recognized as the country's Special Olympic "Coach of The Year."

Friends and family give Special Olympic coach John Lair a surprise reception after a Special Olympic tournament.

Lair has been working with New Hope, a company that provides supportive services for those with intellectual disabilities, and coaching with Special Olympics for 23 years.

Special Olympic officials say he went above and beyond the call of duty.

"For John it's a 24-7 association. It's a relationship that he has with the athletes. You know, not only does john want to train them well and have them do well, but he's very concerned about their health, their fitness, their nutrition, and their social activities. And so they're always involved in activities. There's no event, that's too far away, it seems, for John,” says Kansas Special Olympics President & CEO Chris Hahn.

The mayor also proclaimed today, John Lair day, in his honor.

There are about 1,700 Special Olympic coaches just in Kansas. Lair was picked out of the thousands throughout the entire country.
