Quapaw's First Baptist Church Celebrates 100 Years

Updated:
QUAPAW, OKLAHOMA - The First Baptist Church of Quapaw, OK celebrates the century mark with song and scripture. It stands as testament of Quapaw's resilience.

Just a year before, a tornado threatened to tear the fellowship from its foundation.

“The front section that we're standing in now that had all the roof ripped out there, steeple and everything was tossed across the highway, the middle edition was where the children were at in the nursery right here and the roof was picked up and sat back down there and did all the damage,” says Pastor Matt Robertson.

Despite its ruined conditions, the church was one of the first to offer relief to the community, sharing food from its pantry.

“This time last year, we wouldn't have ever imagined going through the situation that we've gone through. We wouldn't have known really what is was to serve our community in the way that we had the opportunity because of this over the last year.”

The pastor says the tornado was like a blessing in disguise. It gave church members a chance to breathe new life into the building and to the community as a whole."

"There's been nothing but blessings from being able to serve and you know meet people's needs. That's what our purpose is anyway."

Councilman Neal Watson was Mayor when the tornado hit.

“The spirit of the people have been something to behold. When I went downtown after the tornado I couldn't believe how many people were out helping,” says Watson.

The town lost its bank and as well as other local businesses. Unlike the church, Watson says he doesn't expect much else to rebuild.

“Doubtful. You know there's no way to support a business here in town. So i really don't think so."

But now a hundred years old, with a new roof, windows, and doors the church is celebrated as a beacon of hope.
